Do you sometimes get to the conclusion that there is no purpose to life? Well, you should at least have wondered that. I mean if you haven’t asked yourself yet “what are we doing”, you’re in trouble. I’m not sure if I know the answer to that question myself, but I’ve tried to know and here is what I think now:

  1. There is no actual purpose to life, and when it ends, it ends.
  2. The idea of “trying to be a good person” is just a lie you tell yourself to give meaning to your own life.
  3. A selfless deed doesn’t exist. In other words, if you think you’re doing something to make the world a better place, to help somebody in need, to reduce the amount of miseries in the world, to love somebody, or anything like that, it’s just not true. Deep down, you do all that to make yourself feel better and possibly to sleep with a non-guilty conscience at night.
  4. Happiness is a made up concept to prevent killing yourself by giving meaning to your life. If you’re a rich guy living in a penthouse or you’re homeless, you’re no different. Let’s compare a few things that these people say. The rich guy: “now that I’m rich, I feel the need of helping others by donating money to charities” or “You know what makes me happy? If I can win this auction, I’ll make around 3 million euros” or “I hate them¹ because they create all the miseries in the world.” Now the homeless guy: “Once I save some money, I wanna go to Mexico, because all the drugs are there” or “I only need a new pair of shoes” or “Yeah, they² are the reason that I’m not happy in my life.” I’m only comparing the rich and the poor. This is only one category. There are other non-financial categories, but you get the point, right?
1. A specific religion I don’t want to mention in my blog.
2. A specific religion I don’t want to mention in my blog.
∇. All the quotes are authentic by real people.

On a related point, one of the literary genres that really interest me is “the Theater of the Absurd“. I highly recommend reading about it here. Also, I think the song “Live And Let Die” by Paul McCartney and Guns N’ Roses is a very clear point. Listen to it below. By the way, the movie “Pursuit of Happiness” is really cool.

When you were young and your heart was an open book
You used to say live and let live
(You know you did, you know you did you know you did)
But if this ever-changing world in which we’re living
Makes you give in and cry

Say live and let die
Live and let die
Live and let die
Live and let die

What does it matter to ya
When you got a job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hell

My dear Gale, my friend since almost 12 years ago. Don’t worry. I’m not a pessimist or a nihilist, or anything like that. I’m just bringing up some things that occupy my mind. 🙂 By the way, I still wear the sweatshirt you sent me. 😀 UCLA! 😀
